International law firm Sidley Austin says it has hired Katherine Wang as a counsel for its Life Sciences practice in Shanghai. Joining from Swedish-UK pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, where she headed the legal departments in Asia-Pacific and China, Wang will focus on corporate, commercial and regulatory aspects of life sciences matters.

SidleyÆs pharmaceutical industry team, which consists of more than 200 lawyers across the United States, EU and Asia, provides legal services to major pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, food, dietary supplement and cosmetic companies. Its lawyers represent clients at every stage of the product lifecycle and advise on a wide range of issues such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, healthcare, product liability, intellectual property, government enforcement and compliance, antitrust and competition, international trade, M&A transactions and joint ventures and environmental issues.

Sidley has also developed a working relationship with the Shanghai FDA and, in January 2008, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with its Shanghai Institute for Food and Drug Safety. According to the company, Sidley is the first law firm to sign an MOU with the Shanghai Institute for Food and Drug Safety, and will advise on a number of projects relating to the drafting of new drug and device laws in China.

At AstraZeneca, Wang advised on critical strategic and operational initiatives to ensure statutory compliance and realisation of business objectives. Prior to joining the pharmaceutical company, she worked at management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, advising clients in the pharmaceutical and technology industries across Greater China.

Reciprocating the goodwill, Wang noted in a separate comment that Sidley is ôrespected for its global leadership in all aspects of the life sciencesö.
