European institutions such as Societe Generale prefer to wait to promote staff until they have 16+ years of experience while US banks like Goldman Sachs will fast-track people they value. Banks with the youngest managing directors also lead in terms of pay packages, according to bonus and salary benchmarking firm Emolument.
