DBS has appointed Shee Tse Koon as group head of strategy and planning effective Thursday, the Singaporean bank said in a statement.
In his new role, Shee will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies, including providing thought leadership and counsel to the senior leadership team on major strategic issues.
He will also join the bank's group management committee, a 13-strong team that includes product and country heads across all banking functions.
The majority of Shee’s 22-year banking career was with Standard Chartered. He was most recently Standard Chartered’s Indonesia CEO. Before that, he had been the bank’s Europe, Middle East, Africa and Americas head of governance, chief information officer and head of technology and operations, as well as executive assistant to thegroup executive director for Africa and the Middle East.
In his new role Shee will report to Piyush Gupta, CEO of DBS Group.
Shee’s immediate task will likely be examining the bank’s lending business after it had to write down half its S$700 million loan to embattled Singapore oil and gas explorer Swiber, which filed for liquidation last month.
Over the longer term, Shee will also oversee the group’s transition from a Singapore-based bank to a regional lender covering key Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) markets, as well as further expansion into Hong Kong and Shanghai.
