Hundreds of guests from across Asia's finance industry gathered to hear speakers including Sri Lankan Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake (pictured) address FinanceAsia's inaugral Sri Lanka Investment Summit.
The summit heard a range of views on the opportunities on offer in Sri Lanka, an island tipped to become an investment hot spot and a rising tourist destination after a new government brought years of instability to an end.
Speaking before a packed room of investors at the Four Seasons Hotel, Karunanayake reiterated that enforcing financial discipline is key if the economy is to be steered back on to its rightful track. Visitors also heard about reforms intended to target debt reduction.
Vajira Kulatilaka, chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange, was also among they keynote speakers. He shared in an exclusive interview with FinanceAsia the latest progress of a move to demutualise the national stock exchange by early next year.
Other guests participating in a range of panel discussions and lectures included Dr Harsha de Silva, the country's deputy minister of foreign affairs, Jim McCabe, chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank in Sri Lanka, and Arjuna Mahendran, governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
