Sandeep Pahwa starts at BarCap in Singapore

Sandeep Pahwa, who left Deutsche Bank in September, starts at Barclays Capital as head of Southeast Asia investment banking based in Singapore.

Sandeep Pahwa has joined Barclays Capital (BarCap) as head of Southeast Asia investment banking.

BarCap, the investment banking division of British bank Barclays, poached Pahwa in September from Deutsche Bank in Singapore, where he was vice-chairman and head of global banking for Southeast Asia. At Deutsche, Pahwa managed more than 30 senior client relationships in the region.

Deutsche hired Pahwa in 2007 as managing director and head of global banking for Southeast Asia. Pahwa was at the time with HSBC in London where he was a managing director and global head of media and entertainment investment banking and corporate banking. This was a high-profile hire for Deutsche with the German bank creating a new role for Pahwa, overseeing both the bank’s equity-linked business and mergers and acquisitions.

Before he joined HSBC, Pahwa worked for J.P. Morgan in New York for seven years, including a stint in the media and telecommunications investment banking team.

“Pahwa will play a key role in leading the expansion of the [BarCap] franchise in Southeast Asia,” BarCap said a press release announcing that Pahwa has already taken up his new job. He will be responsible for developing and managing senior client relationships and will work alongside the sector and country coverage teams. He will also provide senior coverage for financial institutions, government agencies and corporations.

Pahwa is the latest in a string of hires by BarCap as the firm seeks to build its franchise in Asia under the leadership of Asia-Pacific investment banking head Matthew Ginsburg who joined BarCap in mid-2009.
