Standard Chartered has hired Steven Phan as global head of its structured equity business, based in Hong Kong.
In the role, he will lead a team of structurers and traders who cover the whole suite of equity derivative products, from pricing to idea and general product generation.
Phan previously worked at HSBC in London, where he headed the investments, access and solutions group, and also led the structured fund products business, but left in May 2011 as the bank reorganised its equity derivatives business.
He brings considerable experience of the industry, having spent six years at HSBC and, before that, nine years at Merrill Lynch, where he first made it to managing director and was head of the equity, fund and proprietary indices structured derivatives business.
“I am excited to welcome Steven to Standard Chartered,” said Ed Steel, global head of equity derivatives trading. “Steven brings with him a wealth of experience and will be instrumental in the continued growth and success of our structured equity offering.”
Phan’s resumè describes a banker with a track record of creating and growing derivatives businesses across structured equity, fund-linked products, investment strategies and synthetic asset management, and investor solutions.
At HSBC he had the experience of helping to build a derivatives business at a large commercial bank, including setting up the infrastructure, getting regulatory approvals and hiring traders, structurers, marketers and sales.
Standard Chartered’s team is already in place in Hong Kong, but Phan’s experience is a good fit for the bank.
He reports to Steel and Raghavan Rajagopalan, global co-head of structuring for financial markets.
